Cornell researchers developed CATchain-R, a blockchain platform, to improve the credibility and accuracy of carbon registries, particularly in transportation. Addressing flaws like weak verification and double-counting, CATchain-R creates a transparent, tamper-proof ledger of climate commitments, project details, and carbon credits. This ensures traceability and prevents manipulation. The platform also introduces a carbon credibility index to incentivize organizations to improve their carbon reduction efforts. Tested on New York City’s transportation system, CATchain-R showed the benefits of adhering to carbon-reduction goals versus a business-as-usual approach. The platform aims to foster trust and accountability in climate action.
